What is Sacrococcygeal Teratoma (SCT)?

Sacrococcygeal Teratoma is a rare tumor that develops at the base of a newborn’s spine, near the coccyx (tailbone). It is the most common tumor found in newborns and can be benign or malignant. These tumors are made up of different types of tissue, often including hair, muscle, and bone.

Conditions & Associated Risks

SCTs can vary in size and complexity. Some tumors are visible externally, while others grow inward, potentially affecting nearby organs. If not diagnosed and treated early, large SCTs may lead to:

  • Hydrops fetalis (severe fetal swelling)

  • Preterm labor

  • Compromised organ function

  • Malignancy risk if left untreated

Symptoms

While many cases are diagnosed prenatally via ultrasound, common symptoms after birth may include:

  • A visible lump or mass near the buttocks

  • Constipation or urinary problems

  • Swelling or redness around the lower back

  • Difficulty in movement of the lower limbs in severe cases

Treatment at Little Light Clinic

Our treatment approach involves:

  • Prenatal Diagnosis & Monitoring through advanced fetal imaging

  • Postnatal Surgical Excision, usually performed within the first few days to weeks after birth

  • Follow-Up & Monitoring for recurrence or malignancy

  • Multidisciplinary Care involving neonatologists, pediatric surgeons, and radiologists

Surgery typically involves complete removal of the tumor along with the coccyx to minimize recurrence. In malignant cases, oncology referral and chemotherapy may be required.
