What is Gastroschisis?

Gastroschisis is a birth defect in which a baby is born with the intestines protruding outside of the abdominal wall through a hole, usually to the right of the belly button. Unlike other abdominal wall defects, gastroschisis is not covered by a protective membrane, leaving the intestines exposed to amniotic fluid and increasing the risk of damage and infection.

Symptoms of Gastroschisis

Gastroschisis is typically detected during a prenatal ultrasound. However, at birth, the condition is immediately visible and includes:

  • Intestines outside the baby’s body

  • Possible damage or swelling of the exposed intestines

  • Feeding intolerance

  • Difficulty absorbing nutrients if bowel damage is present

Immediate care is essential to prevent complications such as infection, dehydration, or bowel injury.

Diagnosis and Treatment in Ghaziabad

Prenatal diagnosis through routine ultrasound allows for early planning and timely delivery in a facility equipped for neonatal surgery. After birth, the baby is placed in a sterile environment, and the exposed intestines are protected with a special covering.

The definitive treatment is surgical correction, where the intestines are gradually or immediately returned to the abdominal cavity, and the abdominal wall is closed. Depending on the severity, the procedure may be done in stages using a silo bag or in a single surgery.
