What is Omphalocele?

Omphalocele is a birth defect in which a baby’s abdominal organs—such as intestines, liver, or stomach—protrude through the belly button and are enclosed in a thin, transparent sac. This condition occurs when the abdominal wall fails to close properly during fetal development.

Omphalocele varies in size:

  • Small omphalocele: Only intestines protrude.

  • Large omphalocele: Liver and other organs may also be outside the abdomen.

It is often associated with other congenital anomalies or genetic conditions, so thorough evaluation is essential.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

Omphalocele is typically detected through prenatal ultrasound. After birth, it is visibly obvious as a clear sac containing abdominal organs protruding from the umbilical area.

Additional evaluations include:

  • Echocardiogram

  • Genetic testing

  • Abdominal X-rays or ultrasound to check for associated defects

Treatment in Ghaziabad

At our Ghaziabad center, treatment is individualized based on the size of the omphalocele and the overall health of the baby.

  • For small omphalocele: Surgical closure is usually performed shortly after birth.

  • For large omphalocele: A staged repair may be done. The organs are gradually moved back into the abdomen, and the abdominal wall is closed later once the baby is stable.

Babies are cared for in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), where they receive:

  • Breathing support

  • IV fluids and nutrition

  • Infection prevention and monitoring
