What is Hirschsprung’s Disease?
Hirschsprung’s Disease is a birth defect in which nerve cells (ganglion cells) are missing from parts of the colon. These nerve cells are essential for intestinal muscles to move stool through the bowel. Without them, stool gets backed up, leading to severe constipation or intestinal blockage.
This condition most commonly affects newborns, but in milder forms, it may not be diagnosed until later in infancy or childhood.
Symptoms of Hirschsprung’s Disease
In newborns:
Failure to pass meconium (first stool) within 48 hours of birth
Abdominal swelling or bloating
Vomiting (often green or yellow)
Feeding difficulties
In older infants and children:
Chronic constipation
Poor weight gain
Foul-smelling ribbon-like stools
Repeated episodes of enterocolitis (intestinal infection)
Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent complications like Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis, which can be life-threatening.
