What is Congenital Lobar Emphysema?
Congenital Lobar Emphysema (CLE) is a congenital lung abnormality in which one of the lobes of the lung becomes over-inflated due to a partial blockage of the airway. This excessive air trapping causes pressure on the remaining healthy lung tissue and can impair breathing. CLE usually affects the upper lobes of the lungs and is most commonly diagnosed in the first few weeks of life.
Symptoms of CLE
Symptoms of CLE can range from mild to severe and may include:
Rapid or labored breathing
Chest retractions (inward pulling of the chest during breathing)
Bluish skin (cyanosis)
Poor feeding
Enlarged chest on one side
Recurrent respiratory infections
In some mild cases, CLE may not be diagnosed until later in infancy or childhood.
Diagnosis and Treatment in Ghaziabad
Diagnosis of CLE involves:
Chest X-ray – often shows a hyperinflated lung lobe
CT scan – provides detailed lung structure and extent of compression
Bronchoscopy – may be done to assess the airway obstruction
Treatment options:
Surgical lobectomy – removal of the affected lung lobe is the standard treatment in moderate to severe cases
Observation and monitoring – in mild cases without symptoms, especially if the child is growing well
Our Ghaziabad center offers minimally invasive surgical options when appropriate, with expert post-operative care in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
