What is Biliary Dyskinesia?

Biliary Dyskinesia is a functional disorder in which the gallbladder fails to contract properly, leading to insufficient bile release into the small intestine. Unlike gallstones, this condition is not caused by a physical blockage but by a dysfunction in the gallbladder’s movement or coordination, often involving the sphincter of Oddi.

This condition is more common in adults but can also affect children and adolescents, especially those with unexplained abdominal pain after meals.

Symptoms of Biliary Dyskinesia

  • Right upper abdominal pain, especially after eating fatty meals

  • Nausea and bloating

  • Indigestion

  • Vomiting

  • Pain that radiates to the back or shoulder

  • Normal ultrasound or blood work, making diagnosis challenging

Symptoms are often intermittent but may significantly affect quality of life.

Diagnosis and Treatment in Ghaziabad

Diagnosis typically involves:

  • HIDA scan with CCK stimulation (to measure gallbladder ejection fraction)

  • Abdominal ultrasound or CT scan (to rule out other conditions)

  • Blood tests to evaluate liver and pancreatic function

A gallbladder ejection fraction of less than 35–40% is typically indicative of biliary dyskinesia.

Treatment options:

  • Low-fat diet and lifestyle modifications

  • Medications (in mild or temporary cases)

  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (surgical removal of the gallbladder) is the most effective treatment for chronic, symptomatic biliary dyskinesia

Our center in Ghaziabad is equipped with minimally invasive surgical facilities, ensuring quicker recovery and minimal discomfort.
