What is PUJO?
Pelvi-Ureteric Junction Obstruction (PUJO) occurs when there is a blockage or narrowing at the junction where the kidney connects to the ureter (the tube that drains urine to the bladder). This can cause urine to back up into the kidney, leading to hydronephrosis (swelling of the kidney), pain, and possible loss of kidney function.
Causes of PUJO
Congenital (present at birth) – most common
Crossing blood vessels compressing the ureter
Scar tissue or previous surgery
Infection or kidney stones
Symptoms of PUJO
In infants and children:
Detected on prenatal ultrasound (hydronephrosis)
Abdominal mass or swelling
Recurrent urinary tract infections
Poor growth or feeding difficulties
In older children or adults:
Flank or abdominal pain (especially after drinking fluids)
Blood in urine (hematuria)
Repeated kidney infections
Nausea and vomiting
Diagnosis in Ghaziabad

Diuretic Renogram (DTPA/MAG3 scan) – to assess drainage and function
Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP)
CT Urography (in selected cases)
Treatment: Pyeloplasty Surgery
The gold standard treatment is pyeloplasty, where the obstructed segment is removed and the ureter is reconnected to the kidney.
