What is a Soft Tissue Tumor?

A soft tissue tumor is an abnormal growth that arises from the tissues that connect, support, or surround other structures and organs in the body. These include muscles, fat, nerves, fibrous tissues, blood vessels, and deep skin tissues.

Soft tissue tumors can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Malignant soft tissue tumors are called soft tissue sarcomas.

Most soft tissue tumors have no known cause. However, some risk factors include:

  • Genetic conditions (like Li-Fraumeni syndrome, Neurofibromatosis type 1)

  • Certain chemical exposures (very rare)
  • Premature birth or low birth weight

  • Genetic syndromes (like Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, Familial Adenomatous Polyposis)

  • Hepatic dysfunction at birth

  • Family history of certain cancers

Symptoms

  • If large or pressing on nearby structures: pain, restricted movement, or nerve symptoms like numbness
