What is Achalasia?

Achalasia is a chronic esophageal motility disorder in which the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) — the muscular valve between the esophagus and stomach — fails to relax properly. This leads to difficulty in swallowing, regurgitation of food, and sometimes chest pain or weight loss. Over time, the esophagus may become dilated and less effective at pushing food down.

Symptoms of Achalasia

Patients with achalasia often experience:

  • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) for solids and liquids

  • Regurgitation of undigested food

  • Chest pain or discomfort after eating

  • Heartburn-like sensation

  • Weight loss

  • Frequent coughing or choking, especially at night

Because symptoms progress slowly, achalasia is often misdiagnosed as acid reflux (GERD) or anxiety-related issues.
