What is Biliary Atresia?

Biliary Atresia is a congenital disorder in which the bile ducts inside or outside the liver are absent, blocked, or damaged, preventing bile from draining properly into the intestine. This leads to bile build-up in the liver, causing liver inflammation (cirrhosis) and progressive liver damage.

It typically presents within the first few weeks after birth, and early diagnosis is critical to prevent irreversible liver failure.

Symptoms of Biliary Atresia

Symptoms usually appear within 2 to 6 weeks after birth and may include:

  • Persistent jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)

  • Dark yellow urine

  • Pale or clay-colored stools

  • Enlarged liver or abdomen

  • Poor weight gain

  • Irritability and failure to thrive

If your newborn has jaundice that persists beyond 2 weeks, it’s essential to seek medical attention promptly.

Diagnosis and Treatment in Ghaziabad

Diagnostic tools include:

  • Liver function tests and bilirubin levels

  • Ultrasound of the liver and biliary tract

  • Hepatobiliary scintigraphy (HIDA scan)

  • Liver biopsy

  • Intraoperative cholangiogram (to confirm bile duct anatomy)

Treatment:

  • Kasai Procedure (Hepatoportoenterostomy): A surgical operation where a segment of the intestine is connected directly to the liver to allow bile drainage. Ideally performed before the baby is 60 days old.

  • Liver Transplantation: May be needed if the Kasai procedure fails or liver damage is too advanced.

Post-operative care includes nutritional support, medications, and regular monitoring.
