What is Bronchoscopy?

Malrotation is a birth defect that affects the positioning of a child’s intestines during fetal development. When the intestines don’t rotate properly in the womb, it can lead to a twisting of the bowel (volvulus), causing life-threatening blockages and cutting off blood supply to parts of the intestine.

When is Bronchoscopy Recommended?

Bronchoscopy is performed for a variety of reasons, such as:

  • Chronic or unexplained cough

  • Wheezing or breathing difficulties

  • Recurrent lung infections

  • Coughing up blood (hemoptysis)

  • Suspected foreign body in the airway (common in children)

  • Abnormal chest X-ray or CT scan

  • Biopsy of lung lesions or lymph nodes

  • Evaluation of airway tumors, strictures, or obstructions

These symptoms often appear suddenly and require immediate medical attention. If your child shows any of these signs, consult a pediatric specialist without delay.

Types of Bronchoscopy

  1. Flexible Bronchoscopy

    • Most common and minimally invasive

    • Performed under local anesthesia with sedation

    • Ideal for diagnosis and minor procedures

  2. Rigid Bronchoscopy

    • Performed under general anesthesia

    • Preferred for removing foreign bodies, tumors, or managing major bleeding

    • Often used in children and emergency cases

What to Expect During the Procedure

  • The patient is sedated or under anesthesia

  • The bronchoscope is gently inserted through the nose or mouth

  • The doctor visually examines the airways, takes samples, or performs therapeutic interventions

  • The procedure typically lasts 15–45 minutes, followed by a short observation period
