Home » Nectrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC)
Necrotizing Enterocolitis is a severe condition in which the intestinal tissue becomes inflamed and starts to die, leading to potential perforation (a hole in the intestine) and life-threatening infections. NEC typically occurs in premature infants during the first few weeks of life and is considered a medical emergency.
The signs of NEC can develop suddenly and may include:
Feeding intolerance
Swollen or bloated abdomen
Green or bloody vomit
Lethargy or low activity
Bloody stools
Temperature instability
Apnea or slow heart rate
Early detection and intervention are critical to preventing complications such as intestinal perforation or sepsis.
At our center in Ghaziabad, we use a combination of clinical evaluation, abdominal X-rays, blood tests, and ultrasound to diagnose NEC. The X-ray may show air in the intestinal wall or in the abdominal cavity, which indicates a severe form of NEC.
Treatment for NEC includes:
Stopping oral feeds
IV fluids and nutrition
Antibiotic therapy
Close monitoring in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
In severe cases, where there is intestinal perforation or lack of response to medical treatment, surgical intervention may be required to remove the damaged section of the intestine.
