What is Pancreas Divisum?

Pancreas Divisum is a developmental defect in which the two ducts of the pancreas — the dorsal and ventral ducts — fail to fuse during fetal development. As a result, pancreatic enzymes primarily drain through the smaller dorsal duct and minor papilla instead of the main duct. This abnormal drainage can increase pressure in the pancreatic duct and lead to inflammation.

Symptoms of Pancreas Divisum

While most individuals with pancreas divisum remain asymptomatic, a small percentage may experience:

  • Recurrent upper abdominal pain

  • Acute pancreatitis

  • Chronic pancreatitis

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Digestive issues without a clear cause

These symptoms often prompt investigation when common causes are ruled out.

Diagnosis and Treatment in Ghaziabad

We use state-of-the-art tools to diagnose pancreas divisum accurately:

  • MRCP (Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography) – non-invasive imaging of the pancreatic ducts

  • Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) – high-resolution imaging to assess ductal anatomy and inflammation

  • ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) – both diagnostic and therapeutic

Treatment options include:

  • No treatment if the patient is asymptomatic

  • Endoscopic Minor Papilla Sphincterotomy – to enlarge the small duct opening and relieve pressure

  • Stent placement – to improve pancreatic juice flow

  • Dietary changes and enzyme therapy for digestive support

  • Surgical intervention – in rare, complicated cases
