What is Pyloric Stenosis?
Pyloric stenosis is a condition where the pylorus (the muscle between the stomach and small intestine) becomes abnormally thickened, blocking the passage of food. This condition usually appears in infants between 2 to 8 weeks of age and can lead to dehydration, weight loss, and malnutrition if left untreated.
Symptoms of Pyloric Stenosis
Parents should watch for the following symptoms in their newborn:
Forceful, projectile vomiting after feeding
Constant hunger due to poor food passage
Weight loss or poor weight gain
Dehydration (less urine output, dry mouth, sunken eyes)
Visible wave-like stomach movements after feeding
Lethargy or irritability
These symptoms require immediate medical evaluation. Early diagnosis is key to preventing serious complications.
Diagnosis and Treatment in Ghaziabad
At our Ghaziabad clinic, we use advanced imaging tools like ultrasound to confirm the diagnosis of pyloric stenosis. Once diagnosed, the definitive treatment is a surgical procedure called pyloromyotomy, which involves splitting the thickened pyloric muscle to allow food to pass normally from the stomach to the intestines.
This minimally invasive surgery is safe, quick, and highly effective. Most infants begin feeding within a few hours after surgery and can go home within 1–2 days.
