Home » Urinary Tract Infection
Testicular Torsion occurs when the spermatic cord twists, cutting off the blood supply to the testicle. Without prompt treatment, the lack of blood flow can cause permanent damage or even loss of the testicle within 4 to 6 hours of onset. It most commonly affects teenagers but can happen at any age, including infancy.
Congenital malformation (Bell Clapper deformity)
Sudden trauma or movement
Vigorous physical activity
Cold temperatures
Family history of testicular torsion
Sudden, severe pain in one testicle
Swelling and redness of the scrotum
Nausea or vomiting
Abdominal pain
High-riding or oddly positioned testicle
Pain that does not improve with rest or elevation
If these symptoms are present, seek emergency care immediately.
Diagnostic methods include:
Physical examination
Doppler Ultrasound – to assess blood flow to the testicle
Urinalysis – to rule out infection
However, in many cases, clinical suspicion is enough to proceed directly to surgery, as every minute counts.
Treatment:
Emergency surgery (Detorsion and Orchiopexy):
The twisted testicle is untwisted and saved (if viable)
Both testicles are sutured to the scrotum to prevent recurrence
Orchiectomy (removal) may be necessary if the testicle is non-viable
