What is a Thoracic Tumor?
A thoracic tumor is a growth that develops within the chest cavity (thorax), which includes the lungs, mediastinum (the space between the lungs), chest wall, esophagus, and diaphragm.
These tumors may be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). In children, thoracic tumors often involve the mediastinum and include conditions like neuroblastoma, lymphoma, or germ cell tumors.
Causes and Risk Factors
The causes vary depending on the type of tumor. Many are sporadic (no known cause), but some may be linked to:
- Genetic conditions, such as neurofibromatosis (for nerve tumors)
- Previous infections or inflammations
- Congenital (present at birth) abnormalities in some chest wall tumors
Symptoms of Thoracic Tumor
Because the chest cavity is relatively large, tumors may grow significantly before causing noticeable symptoms. Depending on location and size, symptoms can include:
- Persistent cough or breathing difficulty
- Chest pain or tightness
- Swelling in the neck or face (from pressure on veins)
- Recurrent respiratory infections
- Loss of appetite, fatigue, or weight loss
