What is Vesicoureteral Reflux (VUR)?
VUR is a condition in which urine travels in reverse, from the bladder back up toward the kidneys. Normally, urine flows in one direction—from kidneys to bladder. In VUR, the faulty valve mechanism between the ureters and the bladder causes backflow, which can lead to kidney infections, scarring, and long-term kidney damage if left untreated.
Types of VUR
Poor hygiene
Holding urine for long periods
Dehydration
Sexual activity (in adults)
Structural abnormalities (especially in children)
Diabetes or weakened immunity
Catheter use or urinary retention
Symptoms of VUR
Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Fever with UTI
Pain during urination
Frequent urination or urgency
Bedwetting or daytime wetting
Poor growth or weight gain
High blood pressure (in older children)
Kidney damage or scarring (detected through imaging)
Diagnosis and Treatment in Ghaziabad
Diagnostic tests include:
Ultrasound of kidneys and bladder
Micturating Cystourethrogram (MCU/VCUG) – key test for confirming reflux
DMSA scan – to detect kidney scarring
Urine culture – to check for infections
Treatment depends on severity:
Mild cases (Grades I–II): Often resolve with age, managed with low-dose daily antibiotics and monitoring.
Moderate to severe cases (Grades III–V):
May require surgical correction (ureteral reimplantation)
Endoscopic injection of bulking agents for minimally invasive repair
Regular follow-up to monitor kidney health and growth
